Rivers of Ice

Creating new methods to bring the shifting landscape of the Himalayas to life, Thinc designed an exhibition of the work of mountaineer, photographer and filmmaker David Breashears. Breashears and his organization, GlacierWorks has been working for the past two decades to document the dramatic shifts that climate change has brought to this region by shooting high-resolution images of Himalayan glaciers from the exact vantage point of photographs made up to a hundred years ago, and comparing the loss of glacial mass. The exhibition juxtaposes maps, panoramic images, large-scale prints, and massive projections of historic and contemporary photographs with human-scale artifacts such as climbing gear and notebooks. Immersed in this space, visitors gain new perspectives on the dramatic climatic shifts currently underway in one of the most challenging environments on the planet.
